The Kenya Ports Authority(KPA) has issued a public notice to shipping lines to facilitate importers’ in the nomination of the place of clearance of cargo.
This includes Port clearance, Kenya Revenue Authority’s Licensed Container Freight Stations (CFSS) and Kenya Ports Authority’s Inland Container depots.
The notice follows President William Ruto’s directive that clearing of all goods and other attendant operational issues be reverted to the Port of Mombasa.
Ruto said the move is aimed at restoring thousands of jobs that had been lost in Mombasa.
In a statement,KPA notified all Shipping Lines that importers’ documentation of place of clearance and mode of transport for their goods shall be at their choice.
According to KPA, the notice supersedes the notice of June 6 2018 which locked out importers from nominating their place of clearance.
Meanwhile, the port of Mombasa remains resilient in the development of paths as outlined in its strategic plan for 2018-2022.
In a recent statement, KPA said it will improve services and invest in infrastructure development and capacity expansion programme ahead of schedule.
