- GPE, Safaricom Ethiopia Boards appoint Peter Ndegwa as Chairperson;
Peter Ndegwa has been appointed as the new Board Chairperson for the Global Partnership for Ethiopia (GPE) and Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC (STE) Advisory Boards, effective May 22, 2025.
He succeeds Michael Joseph, who retired after four years of distinguished service.
“We bid farewell to Michael Joseph as Chairman of the Global Partnership for Ethiopia (GPE) Board and the Safaricom Ethiopia Advisory Board — a visionary leader whose impact has been foundational to our journey,” read part of the statement.
Global Partnership for Ethiopia comprises Safaricom PLC from Kenya, Vodacom from South Africa, Sumitomo Corporation from Japan, British International Investment from the UK and the International Finance Corporation based in the USA.
Ndegwa is the Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom Group, a $3 billion turnover business that operates as Safaricom PLC in Kenya and Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC in Ethiopia.
The Boards of GPE and Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC extend their gratitude to Joseph for his dedicated service, sound advice, and unwavering commitment.
Joseph will continue to support Safaricom Group in various capacities including as a Trustee of the MPESA Foundation.
Safaricom Ethiopia announced the expansion of its network coverage across the Somali Region, fully covering Gode, Kebridehar, Kebribeya, Degehabur, Wajale, Awbare, and towns in between.
This expansion reaffirms our commitment to enhancing connectivity and digital financial services for communities across Ethiopia.
In addition to providing reliable connectivity, the Telco provided Digital Financial Services through M-PESA, which has seen a commendable adoption across the Somali Region, marking one of the highest usage rates in Ethiopia.
