- BAT Kenya Announces Leadership Changes in Planned Succession;
BAT Kenya has announced a major leadership transition as part of its long-term succession plan, naming Sidney Wafula as the new Managing Director effective June 16, 2026.
Wafula will take over from Crispin Achola, who will step down from the role on June 15, 2026 after serving as Managing Director since January 1, 2021.
Achola is set to pursue other opportunities within the BAT Group following a five-and-a-half-year tenure during which he led the company through a period marked by regulatory changes, market complexity, and strategic transformation.
During his leadership, BAT Kenya strengthened its operational resilience, enhanced commercial execution, and delivered sustained value for shareholders.
The company said Achola also reinforced the firm’s export franchise and advanced its long-term competitiveness and sustainability strategy.
In a statement, Achola said it had been an honour to lead the company and work with a talented team to deliver strong results and shareholder value.

Wafula currently serves as Finance Director for BAT Sub-Saharan Africa Area and has been with the company since 2006, when he joined as Head of Audit.
Over the years, he has held several senior roles across the BAT Group, including finance and operational leadership positions in West Africa, Egypt, Southern Africa, and East and Central Africa.
“These assignments have provided him with a broad perspective and experience in developing business strategy and enhancing financial and operational performance across diverse markets,” the company said in the statement.
At the same time, the board announced the appointment of Catherine Chepkonga as Finance Director effective April 1, 2026. She will replace Philemon Kipkemoi, who will leave the company on March 31, 2026 after a 19-year career with the organisation.
Kipkemoi, who has served as Finance Director since 2020, played a key role in driving strong financial performance, strengthening financial governance, and leading major strategic initiatives within the company.
Chepkonga joined the BAT Group in 2012 and has held several senior finance roles across the region, including leadership positions in Uganda, East Africa, and the Horn of Africa markets.
She most recently served as Finance Controller for East and Southern Africa Markets.
Commenting on the changes, BAT Kenya Board Chair Rita Kavashe thanked Achola and Kipkemoi for their leadership and contribution to the company’s growth and transformation.
“These changes represent the company’s long-term succession planning and reflect the strong talent pipeline within the organisation,” Kavashe said.
“We are delighted to welcome Sidney and Catherine to the leadership team as we continue to pursue transformation and deliver on our vision of creating a better tomorrow.”
The leadership changes come as BAT Kenya continues to navigate evolving regulatory environments and shifting market dynamics within the tobacco industry.
