- MRM Unveils Solar Power Project at Mariakani Plant, Advancing Kenya’s Clean Energy Agenda;
Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM), Kenya’s leading manufacturer of steel roofing and building solutions, has commissioned a groundbreaking
solar power project at its Mariakani plant in Mombasa County.
The initiative marks a significant step in the company’s transition to renewable energy and reinforces its position as a leader in the green energy revolution in African Manufacturing.
By integrating solar energy into MRM’s largest production plant in Mariakani, the company is addressing the challenges of climate change, lowering its carbon footprint, and complementing the use of renewable energy.
Commenting on the development, Albert Sigei, CEO of MRM, said, “This project reflects our long-term vision of embedding sustainability into our business model, underscoring our dedication to integrating sustainable practices into our core operations.
It will directly support MRM’s sustainability and corporate responsibility goals by generating over 4,200 MWh of clean energy annually, avoiding more than 200 tonnes of CO2 emissions, and saving substantial
electricity costs.”
Albert Sigei further added, “This project demonstrates MRM’s commitment to environmental responsibility, aligning operations with Kenya’s clean, reliable, and sustainable energy targets and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Beyond enhancing efficiency, we are also making a significant contribution to Kenya’s climate action efforts and setting a precedent for responsible manufacturing across Africa.
This allows us to continue providing high-quality products to our customers, ensuring minimal environmental impact.”
The project was executed in partnership with GridX Africa, a forward-thinking developer and financier dedicated to accelerating Africa’s transition to clean energy, and has been managed and executed by Orb Energy, a specialist in end-to-end renewable energy solutions.
Speaking about this collaboration, Ryan Dunn, Chief Executive Officer from GridX, noted that, “Our goal is to de-risk the adoption of renewable energy for businesses across Africa through the provision of bespoke financing solutions.
This project is a perfect example of how strategic investment can unlock significant environmental and economic benefits, paving the way for a more sustainable manufacturing sector.
Going forward, we encourage more manufacturing companies across the region to adopt this financing model in setting up renewable energy for commercial and industrial purposes.”
Damian Miller, CEO and Co-founder of Orb Energy noted, “Orb Energy is pleased to have brought its technical expertise in designing, supplying, and installing MRM’s first rooftop Solar system, totaling 2.9 MWp.
This makes it one of the largest combined rooftop Solar PV systems in Kenya.
This is a testament to the possibilities of harnessing solar energy, which is abundant in this region. We look forward to working with MRM and other manufacturing companies to install rooftop and ground-mounted solar solutions.”
Through this significant milestone, MRM cements its role as a thought leader in Africa’s sustainability agenda, setting new benchmarks for responsible industry practices while contributing to a cleaner, more resilient future.
