- Safaricom, ONFON Mobile Partner for Affordable 4G Phones
Mobile have teamed up to make 4G smartphones more accessible to Kenyans.
Through this partnership, customers can now purchase Neon Ultra 2 smartphones on Lipa Mdogo Mdogo (Pay-As-You-Go) terms, financed by ONFON Mobile.
Fawzia Ali, Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer, highlighted that the phones also include insurance protection for loss and accidental damage.
This insurance, combined with the convenience of daily payments, represents a significant step toward lowering smartphone ownership costs.
“In today’s world, a smartphone is more than just a device; it is a gateway to opportunity. From mobile banking, online learning, accessing e-health and government services, we want every Kenyan to have a fair shot at participating in the digital economy,” said Ali.
With over 12 million customers holding onto 2G phones, Safaricom is overcoming cost and affordability hurdles to migrating to 4G, particularly for low-income and rural consumers.
“This Eldoret launch is just the start. We see it as a pilot for a full national rollout, one where every Kenyan will have access to the tools they need to connect, learn, trade, and grow,” said Fawzia Ali.
While Safaricom’s Lipa Mdogo Mdogo product has already helped many customers upgrade from 2G, the partnership with ONFON increases the reach of device financing through ONFONs USSD-based subscription platform *797# and its retail agent network throughout the country.
“Our PayGo platform is designed to be inclusive and by combining it with a well-established brand like Safaricom, we can truly make a positive impact on bridging the digital divide,” added ONFON Mobile CEO Dennis Makori.
The offer is available at Safaricom Shops, Safaricom Dealers and ONFON Mobile partner outlets nationwide.
ONFON’s large distribution network of retail agents nationwide makes it convenient for customers in rural and peri-urban areas to access and enroll in the device financing scheme.
