Lilian Nyawanda Succeeds Humprey Wattanga at KRA

The KRA Board announces transition. Mr. Humphrey Wattanga concludes his service as Commissioner General. The Authority  commended his leadership and instrumental role in our restructuring reforms.

In the interim, the Board has appointed Dr. Lilian Nyawanda as the Acting Commissioner General. Dr. Nyawanda currently serves as the Commissioner of Customs and Border Control.

KRA continues to focus on effective and efficient service delivery for all Kenyans,the statement read.

KRA has been lately on appointing spree includng appointements of commissioners of various key departments.In March Kenya Revenue Authority appointed Mohamed Abdul M’maka ‘ndc’ (K) as the new Commissioner for the Investigations and Enforcement Department, effective 11th March 2026.

The appointment was approved by the KRA Board following a competitive recruitment process aimed at strengthening the Authority’s capacity to combat tax evasion, financial crimes, and illicit trade.

In December 2025 The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) appointed two strategic executive appointments approved by the KRA Board, as the institution accelerates its organisational transformation, technology modernization, and evidence-driven tax policy agenda.

The Board has also approved the appointment of Mr. Alex Kimani Mwangi as Commissioner of the newly established Tax Research and Analysis Unit (TR&A), effective 12th January 2026.

The TR&A Unit is a new high-impact, technical office that will serve as the central hub for research, modelling, forecasting, and evidence-based tax policy analysis.

The unit will spearhead Kenya’s tax reform analytics, support the National Treasury with empirical insights, and strengthen KRA’s internal research capacity through rigorous data-driven approaches.

Mr. Mwangi joined KRA in 2002 as a Graduate Trainee and has risen through the ranks, most recently serving as the Acting Commissioner, Business Strategy, Technology and Enterprise Modernisation since March 2025
