- Old Mutual sensitises athletes on financial wellness in Eldoret;
- The week-long Eldoret activation will feature a series of financial literacy and customer engagement sessions as Old Mutual deepens financial wellness conversations across the country;
Old Mutual has launched a week-long Market Storm in Eldoret to deepen financial wellness engagement with customers, businesses and communities across the region.
The engagement began with a financial literacy session for athletes, bringing together both retired sportsmen and women and those who are still actively competing.
The session focused on helping athletes strengthen their financial planning, saving, investment and risk-management habits to support long-term financial security during and beyond their active sporting careers.
“Our Market Storm is about meeting customers where they are,listening to them and helping them make more informed financial decisions.
Starting the Eldoret engagement with athletes was particularly significant because financial wellness is as important during an active sporting career as it is after the finish line.
We are also pleased to build on the engagements we have already held in other parts of the country,” said Martin Karenju, Managing Director, Old Mutual Life Assurance Kenya.
The focus on long-term financial planning comes against findings from the Old Mutual Financial Wellness Monitor 2025, which show that while 91% of surveyed working Kenyans have a specific savings goal, only 37% are currently saving for retirement.
Among those not saving for retirement, 34% have no alternative retirement plan. Retirement preparedness remains one of the key financial vulnerabilities identified by the study.
The findings reinforce the importance of starting financial planning early, particularly for people whose primary earning years may be concentrated within a relatively short period.
The Monitor also found that 54% of working Kenyans have the same or more debt than they did a year ago, while 40% reported dipping into their savings to make ends meet,highlighting the need to build stronger financial buffers alongside long-term investments.
On his part,Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Managing Director Japheth Ogalloh highlighted the role of protection in financial wellness.
He urged households and businesses to review their insurance needs, particularly ahead of the projected El Niño weather conditions.
“Protection is an essential part of financial wellness.With the projected El Niño conditions likely to heighten exposure to weather-related risks, this is an important time for households, motorists and businesses to review whether they have adequate cover.
Insurance provides a financial safety net that can help people and businesses recover faster when unexpected events occur,” said Ogalloh.
The Eldoret Market Storm follows similar customer engagements in Thika,Nakuru and Mombasa and is part of Old Mutual’s wider effort to engage customers directly,understand their evolving needs and connect them to practical solutions across saving, investing, insurance, health and financial protection.
Over the course of the week, Old Mutual teams will continue engaging customers and communities across Eldoret through a series of market-facing activities and financial wellness conversations designed to make financial services more accessible,relevant and responsive to everyday needs.
